X-Men and Kristallnacht

This past weekend was the 70th Anniversary of Kristallnacht, which reminds me (among other things) that absolutely everyone should be reading "X-Men Magneto: Testament."

It is the best comic book series I have read in the last several years, and it's really not even close to #2. Magneto: Testament is essentially a Holocaust story being marketed as a "Magneto's Secret Origins" story.

The first two issues have been incredible. Magneto is here presented only as Max Eisenhardt -- a pre-teen Jew growing up in Germany in the 1930s. The "superpowers" are essentially non-existent, and are really only there at all as rationales for some more mundane abilities he has. (Max is a poor athlete overall, but excels in the Javelin, for example.)

It's really hard to describe what makes it so incredible, but it all just works very well together, and is wonderful to read.

Testament #3 comes out tomorrow. If you haven't done so, buy #1 and #2 today.
